What Is the Difference Between Hiking and Trekking?
In general, the two words hiking and trekking are used conversely. Hiking refers to going on a long walk, for enjoyment or exercise. The word trekking refers to long duration hike far away from home.
Hiking is going on along walk, which is intended for pleasure or exercise. It involves a long active and lively walk out in nature on trails or footpaths for a day or overnight. Hiking is typically done on previously made roads. Compared to trekking, hiking involves a short distance and a shorter amount of time. Hiking does not require great effort like trekking. Hiking has many health benefits. It may lower the risk of strokes and heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.,and it helps one to burn calories and lose weight. Being in nature can also improve one’s mental health. Hiking requires spending time outdoors for a long time, one requires to take equipment with them. These include good hiking boots, a rucksack, waterproof gear, a walking pole, and water.
Trekking is undertaking a long journey across a difficult terrain on foot, usually for pleasure. Unlike hiking, trekking involves more than one day — not only a few hours. Trekkers tend to go to locations that are less accessible than hikers. They may involve all sorts of terrains. This is why they are more effort-taking than hiking.
While on the trek, the trekkers get opportunities to visit remote local areas and explore the culture of different places. Trekking almost has the same health benefits as hiking. If one is not familiar with going on long walks and is not fit then they should start with hiking and not trekking. Trekking needs more equipment than hiking; in addition to the essentials mentioned, one will also need sleeping bags, tents, and other equipment that will help one to live outside for many days.
There are also similarities between Hiking and Trekking — Both involve walking a long distance, both have many health benefits and a typical trek is actually a type of long hike.
