Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek - Best Treks to Do In Uttarakhand

 Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek is an easy to moderate grade trek that encircles the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand offering thrilling and entrancing experiences like none other. The highest point in the trek is at the Chandrashila summit that towers as high as 13,100 ft. This trek is completed within five days and is one of the best treks to do in Uttarakhand, especially during winters.

Besides the fascinating landscapes, the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek also enjoys religious significance because of the Tungnath temple that lies en route, perched at an altitude of 12,000 ft. The Tungnath temple is also known to be the world’s highest temple of Lord Shiva and remains one of the key driving forces behind this trek.

More often than not, the trails to the Chandrashila summit are crowded with believers and pilgrims from all across the world elevating the experience of trekking to a whole new level. The Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek remains remarkably rousing and entrancing from the very beginning of the trek.

To begin this trek, you will have to arrive at Rishikesh to drive to Sari that lies 190 km away, at an altitude of 6,600 ft. The drive from Rishikesh to Sari is thoroughly bewildering as well as fascinating. You will drive past the mesmerizing town of Devprayag from where a river will accompany you, running parallel all the way till Sari. At Sari, you can interact with the locals and even visit the local marketplace to shop local and relish the beauty of the region.

From Sari, you will trek to Deoriatal that remains nestled at 7,800 ft, at a distance of 3 km. The trek from Sari to Deoriatal is short yet action-packed. You will traverse dense thickets that will unfold into gasp-worthy views of distant, mighty, snow-clad mountains. As you emerge from the last tree line, you will be able to spot the serene and enchanting Deoriatal cradled by the Chaukhamba massifs. The campsite at Deoriatal is famous for bird watching. Since it will take less than an hour for you to trek from Sari to Deoriatal, you can use the remaining day to hike to nearby areas and admire the alluring landscapes while relishing the sight of exotic bird species.

On the third day of the Chandrashila Trek, you will trek from Deoriatal to Baniyakund via the Rohini Bugyal. Baniyakund lies at a distance of 16 km from Deoriatal and the trek to the same is not only exhilarating but also aesthetically pleasing. You will first traverse Rhododendron and maples to gradually gain height. As you emerge out of these forests you will enter the meandering folds of the serene and lush green Rohini Bugyal. As soon as you enter the Rohini Bugyal, you will find refreshing and magnified views of the Chaukhamba massifs and Mt. Kedar on the one hand and jaw-dropping views of the Chandrashila Peak on the other.

An easy walk past the spine-chilling Kedarnath sanctuary will eventually lead you to the campsite of Baniyakund, close to which lies the Chopta village at 8,700 ft.

You will have to drive to Chopta, which lies 3 km away from Baniyakund, the next day. From Chopta you will begin trekking towards the Chandrashila summit that remains distanced approximately 8 km away. As you gain height, you will encounter many pilgrims passionately climbing upwards. The Tungnath temple lies en route to the Chandrashila summit. This trek becomes exponentially daunting and challenging during winters with foot-deep snow smeared over the entire landscape.

As you gradually gain height, the trails will tend to become steeper and steeper eventually leading to the Chandrashila summit at 13,100 ft. After the nerve-wracking climb to the summit, you will discover a wide panorama of mountainscape with many notable mountain peaks in the picture. The sight is absolutely surreal, astonishing, staggering and all things other-worldly. You will have the fierce Mt. Nanda Devi, the Chaukhamba massifs, Mt.Trishul, Mt. Dronagiri, the dome of Kedar, and Mt.Kedar along with the peaks of Gangotri and ThalaysagarRanges gloriously standing before you. After enjoying the eagle’s eye view of the landscape from the Chandrashila summit, you will descend back to Baniyakund to camp for the night.

From Baniyakund you can depart to Rishikesh, the next day to successfully complete the Chandrashila Trek.
