TWO MODERATE GRADE, 12,000 FT TREKKING EXPEDITIONS TO DO IN INDIA
Given the rich topographical diversity found in India, India sure has a lot to offer trekking enthusiasts from across the world. Its exotic geography makes it one of the most ideal places in the world for trekkers to thrive in.
Although the list of exciting Indian trekking expeditions that offer marvelous scenic views and unique experiences is unending, the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek and the Sandakphu Trek are two amongst a few treks that sit right on top of the list and have been winning hearts since forever.
DEORIATAL CHANDRASHILA TREK -
Nestled in the enticing and ever-refreshing Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the Chandrashila Trek sneaks into some of the most exotic nooks of Uttarakhand to allow trekkers to discover and experience the Godly views of the magnificent Chandrashila peak. It is one of the few treks that remain suitable for beginners despite rising to an altitude as high as 12,000 ft. The easy to moderate grade trails spread over enticing, and breathtaking landscapes of Uttarakhand precisely elevate this trek to the ‘must-do-Indian-treks’ category.
Mentioned below are four of my personal reasons that have been driving me to hop onto this trek -
1) The exotic mountain views -
Mountain views are common amongst most treks, how does that make the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek any different from the others? Well, the Chandrashila peak remains encapsulated by the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand and is one of the best spots to drool over some of the greatest Himalayan peaks. Not only are the trails to the top gradually ascending and accommodating but equally easily are the grand views of epic mountain peaks witnessed from the top. From the electric views of Chaukhamba right in front, to the goosebumps inducing views of the Janhukut Peak, and the Mandani Parbat in the left, the screen before you continues to remain embellished with robust, majestic and transfixing views of Indian mountains such as the Dome of Kedar, Mt Thalaysagar and Kedarnath, as well as the fascinating Gangotri Range.
2) The Deoria Tal en route -
Nestled in the thick forests of Uttarakhand, 3km away from Sari lies the enchanting Chandrashila Lake, perched at an altitude of 7,800 ft. Irrespective of the season you choose to trek in, the Deoriatal remains extravagant, arresting and spellbinding all throughout the year. What adds to the beauty of this teal-stained lake are the grand reflections of the Chaukhamba massifs gloriously towering high in the backdrop. Additionally the Deoriatal is one amongst the few Indian lakes that remain suitable for camping around. It is one of the key driving forces that make me want to do the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek over and over again.
3) The vast sprawling meadows -
The entire third day of the Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek remains my most favourite part about the whole trek. From a splendid sunrise at the Deoriatal to an excellent trek through the rising and dipping folds of the sprawling Rohini Bugyal, everything about the third day induces zeal, excitement and anticipation in all trekkers for the forelying delicious, awe-inspiring scenic views of the region.
4) The trail from Chopta to Tungnath Temple -
The Tungnath temple is a temple held in high regards and utmost reverence. And that is precisely why the entire trail from Chopta to Tungnath is more often than not found to be completely crowded by passionate pilgrims from around the world. The sight of watching pilgrims of all age groups slowly yet steadily climb uphill with passion and admiration to pay their genuine homage is surreal, heartwarming and absolutely worth witnessing.
SANDAKPHU TREK -
Secluded from the hustle and bustle of the state of West Bengal, the Sandakphu Peak towers high at the very edge of the state, almost between the Indo-Nepal border. The trail to the peak juggles in and out of the two countries at various points and offers exquisite views of the exotic geographic locations en route. Despite rising as high as 12,000 ft, the Sandakphu Trek remains suitable not only for amateur trekkers interested in leveling up their game but also for solo traveling enthusiasts.
Mentioned below are four of my personal reasons that have been driving me to hop onto this trek -
1) The exhilarating views of some of the world’s tallest mountains -
You read that right. As you reach the top of the summit, you will be completely blown over by the arresting, spine-chilling and nerve wrecking views of four of the world’s tallest mountains standing tall and aloof, in all their might, right before you. From the fierce Mt Everest, to the robust Mt Lhotse, the Giant Mt Makalu and the majestic Mt Chomo Lonjo, you will be able to relish views of all these iconic mountain peaks upfront and close like never before. Adding flavor to the epic experience will be the Himalayas of Nepal, the Ranges of Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Jannu (Kumbhakarna) and Baruntse etc in the backdrop. The sight is unbelievably beautiful, moving and almost utopian.
2) The exotic flora and fauna found around the Singalila National Park -
On the third day of the itinerary, as you trek from Tumling towards Kalapokhri, you cross paths with the Singalila National Park that lies en route. The Singalila National Park is popular for exciting reasons and is a paradise for bird and animal watchers. As you traverse thick forests adjacent to this park, you tend to discover many exotic species of flora and sometimes even fauna. The complete hike is thrilling, and also slightly daunting, nonetheless perfect for adventure enthusiasts.
3) The trails embellished with sprawling Rhododendrons and Magnolias —
As you trek from Tumling to Kalapokhri, besides the Singalila National Park, another aspect that will indefinitely get you drooling is the trails filled with blooming, vibrant and unconditionally beautiful Rhododendrons and Magnolias. These flowers spread vehemently and completely take over the landscapes, beautifying them with their ethereal scent and aesthetic pleasantness.
4) The mind-blowing varieties of Orchids en route —
The region that cradles the Sandakphu peak is also famous for having as many as 600 varieties of Orchids which is also one of the vastest varieties of orchids to be found anywhere in the world. The amount of refreshing, vibrant and enticing landscapes explored during the Sandakphu Trek remain highly unmatched by most other trekking expeditions.
