Brahmatal - The emerald Blue Lake of Uttarakhand
The beauty of Brahmatal lies in the seasonally transitioning landscapes that gracefully switch between shades of milky white during winters, lush green during monsoons, and refreshing brown during springs. During each of these seasons, what remains constant is the lake’s ability to arrest all us travelers with its enchanting charmer.
Snuggled in the depths of Garhwal Himalayas, the Brahmatal lake remains encapsulated by Uttarakhand’s exotic, remote, and splendid regions. However, the trek to this lake is neither extremely easy nor everyone’s cup of tea. It is a moderate grade trek that takes trekkers to a maximum altitude of 12,200 ft in a span of 6 days, covering a distance of roughly 24 km.
Listed amongst the best destinations for Winter treks in India, the Brahmatal trek offers an unmatched, excellent experience full of thrill and adventure. The mind-boggling view of the lake spectacularly reflecting the majestic mountains towering high around it after an arduous trek is surreal and breathtakingly beautiful.
Of all the seasons, the winter season remains my favorite time of the year for the trek to Brahmatal. The innermost landscapes of Uttarakhand remain completely smothered by knee-deep powdery snow during winters, and I clearly enjoy the scenery thoroughly.
Lohajung, a serene village perched at an altitude of 7,662 ft, marks the starting point of the Brahmatal Trek. The easiest way to reach Lohajung is through a pleasant drive from Rishikesh. Rishikesh lies 250 km away from Lohajung. The drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung traverses exciting destinations of Uttarakhand, such as the Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag, and lasts approximately 10 hours.
The last time I drove from Rishikesh to Lohajung, I was as good as the dead by the end of it. Even though the drive is astonishingly pleasing, it does get exhausting. I was quick to retire and sleep that night.
I woke up the following day to resume the Brahmatal trek with a thrilling hike to Bekaltal that lies 6 km away, at an altitude of 9,690 ft. The trails from Lohajung to Bekaltal initially sneak in and out of remote villages to enter thick forest covers of Oak and Rhododendrons, beyond which lies the Bekaltal campsite roughly 15 mins away from the gleaming Bekaltal lake. My friends and I called it a day at Bekaltal and resumed the Brahmatal trek with extra zeal the following day.
Brahmatal, the endeared emerald blue lake, lies just 7 km away from Bekaltal. It took us approximately 7 hours to hike up to 10,450 ft. The trails were very steep initially but gradually flattened out. We could spot the Shivalik peak and peaks of the Greater Himalayas as we climbed higher. The Brahmatal campsite lies 500 m away from Brahmatal Lake, which we could easily visit at any time. As we reached closer to Brahmatal Lake and witnessed the transfixing scenery unfold before us, we were devastated by its beauty. The Brahmatal Lake is truly an epitome of serenity. After admiring the landscape and wholeheartedly enjoying the ambiance, we returned to the Brahmatal campsite and packed up for the night.
We began the fourth day of the Brahmatal trek with a bright and refreshing sunrise at Brahmatal. Soon after, we began to trek towards Tilbudi that lies 7 km away from Brahmatal. We were to traverse the Brahmatal Pass en route. The ascent from Brahmatal to Brahmatal Pass is of moderate grade with a few steep slopes here and there. At first, we crossed past the Brahmatal Lake over again to head towards the Brahmatal Pass. The Brahmatal Pass remains nestled at the highest altitude on the entire Brahmatal trek.
It is always thrilling and electrifying to walk along this route. As we began to gain height, peaks of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti became more transparent than ever. Words simply fall short before the grandeur of the soul-warming sights that are witnessed along this route. At the Brahmatal Pass, it was as if we were experiencing a utopian world. Mt Chaukhambha, Nilgiri, Neelkanth, Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Mana, and Maitoli all stood before us in all their glory, and it was breathtaking. A decent descent from the pass took us to the campsite of Tilbudi, where we camped for the night, in approximately 1 hour.
The next morning, we woke up to resume the remaining trek with enthusiasm. Post breakfast, we quickly began descending towards Wan that lies roughly 4 km away from Tilbudi. The trails from Tilbudi traverse refreshing forests of Oak and Rhododendrons and lead to the enticing Chota Tilbudi. A few meters away from Chota Tilbudi lies the mesmerizing Wan village at an altitude of 8,000 ft. From a little ahead of the village, we took a cab to return to Lohajung, the starting point of our trek. It took us roughly one hour to cover that distance. After reaching Lohajung, we retired for the night.
The following day, we drove past the same route to return to Rishikesh from Lohajung. We returned to Rishikesh in nearly 10 hours with pleasant memories and nostalgic hearts and then drifted away to our respective destinations.
Overall, the Brahmatal trek is an excellent expedition that offers a raw, wild, and equally thrilling experience of trekking in India. It has been and shall always be one of my favorites of all time.
